Yesterday there was a local ice day for the first time this winter, Weeronline reports. In Hoogeveen it remained freezing all day. The temperature did not rise above -0.2 degrees.

Last year the first local ice day was on November 30. The last ice day was on January 18, in Maastricht.

In the current climate there are on average three ice days in the west of Zeeland and nine in the east and northeast of the country. There has never been a winter in which there was no ice day at any official measuring point.

By far the most ice days were in the winter of 1947. Between November 1946 and March 1947, the temperature in Eelde remained below zero for the entire 24 hours on 61 days. The record for De Bilt is 49 ice days.
