A wonderful match in which PSV was lord and master. That is the conclusion of the Van de Kerkhof brothers after the last match of this calendar year against Feyenoord. “We gave football lessons to those Rotterdammers,” says René in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant.

Yet the former right winger also remains critical. “The first fifteen minutes after the break it was a tight squeeze and Feyenoord could have gotten back into the match.” Brother Willy looks at this matter-of-factly: “You simply cannot dominate for ninety minutes.”

Willy thought that Mauro Júnior was the absolute star. “He played a wonderful match and did everything well. He was so dominant on the left side. Hadj Moussa did not appear in the match at all and that was the merit of Mauro Júnior.” René especially had an honorable mention for Jerdy Schouten, who is back with a vengeance. “And I thought it was striking that Perišic played instead of Bakayoko. That was a very good move, so I have to compliment Bosz for that.”

“Lozano deserved a more dignified farewell.”

But René also criticizes the trainer. “Lozano was ultimately only allowed to participate for two or three minutes in his last match. I think Lozano deserved a more dignified farewell, let him play fifteen, twenty minutes. Then he can still perform something. I think that is a mistake by Bosz.” As far as Willy is concerned, Lozano should also have been given some more playing time. “But that’s just how it works in top sport.”

After the short winter break, Lozano will no longer be there, but otherwise not much seems to have changed in the selection. “They shouldn’t let anyone go, not even Pepi, who also understands that he is doing very well at PSV,” says Willy. Like his brother, he does not think it is necessary to strengthen the selection next month. “We already have about 25 players and, even without Lozano, there are still plenty of attackers. That is more than enough.”

“Sorry, forgot the nail.”

Noa Lang’s opening goal was special for several reasons. He shot it in so hard that the net came loose on one side. “Yes, sorry, I tied the nets, but I forgot a nail,” Willy jokes. The moment brought back memories of an incident from 1974 when Willy van der Kuijlen kicked straight through the net against Wageningen. “The ball bounced back from the backboard behind the goal, so referee Keizer thought it was wide. But then he went to look and saw the hole in the net and we still got the goal.”

In addition to this wonderful incident, the brothers also discuss the ideal setup in the podcast and look ahead to 2025.
