June 7 – 2.27pm – MILAN

By the end of this month of June, but there is no official launch date, the Chinese giant BYD will present the new Byd Dolphin G DM-iversion “super hybrid” of his compact town Dolphin, already on sale in Europe with 100% electric motorization. The new model, apart from the engine, will also be slightly different from the battery-powered one in terms of dimensions, while it will be practically identical in terms of internal layout. Or at least that’s what it seems like when you look at it spy photo published by the Chinese press.

BYD DOLPHIN G DM-I: THE INTERIORS

The spy photo of the interior of the new Byd Dolphin G DM-i produced in Szeged, Hungary, is only one, of low quality and, what’s more, much of the cockpit is camouflaged by fabrics added to not show the main details. However, knowing the interior of the electric model, it is clear to note that there are differences (if there are any). imperceptible. The plug-in hybrid version of Byd Dolphin features the three-spoke steering wheel cut in the lower part, the 5-inch digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel and the central display 12.8 inch that can rotate 90 degrees, to be positioned vertically or horizontally, as the driver chooses. We take compatibility with for granted Android Auto And Apple Carplay Wirelessalready present on the electric version and now quite standard in B-segment cars. The spy photo confirms the presence of some physical buttons under the central screen, a bottle holder with two slots and an object holder in the central tunnel, where there is also the armrest.

BYD DOLPHIN G DM-I: THE OUTSIDE

Unlike for the interiors, for the exteriors of Byd Dolphin G DM-i we have the official renderings of the manufacturer from which it is clear that the design of the hybrid model will be different in several areas compared to that of the current electric version. Meanwhile the dimensions change: 4,160 mm long (-130 mm), 1,825 mm wide (+55 mm) and 1,570 mm high. The new style it is a little more aggressive in its lines, especially in the grille and headlights. The side line has also been revisited, with the doors better designed and with a more slender appearance.

BYD DOLPHIN G DM-I: THE POWERTRAIN

Finally, no official information regarding the hybrid engine. However, the acronym DM-i in Byd means “super hybrid“, that is, a very particular version of Plug-in hybrid which will probably be the same one already seen on the Byd Act 2 DM-i. If this hypothesis is confirmed, then the new Dolphin for Europe will be equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, with a power of 97 horsepower, supported by a 194 horsepower electric motor (total power of the hybrid system of 194 horsepower). The combustion engine, in optimal driving conditions, will mainly serve to recharge the battery. The Atto 2 DM-i has one Lfp battery (the famous “Blade Battery” by Byd) with capacity of 7.8 kWh (Active setup) o 18 kWh (Boost setup), which translates into pure electric ranges of 40 and 90 kilometers respectively. Considering the smaller size and weight of the Byd Dolphin G DM-i compared to the Atto 2 SUV, and the better aerodynamics, we can hypothesize slightly higher electric autonomy for the new model.
