A judoka who was part of the Turkish junior national team Emre Yazgan has died in an avalanche. Among other things, the news covered the matter Turkish BBC.
The national team’s coaches had taken 16-year-old Yazgan and 14 other youngsters for a walk in nature to improve their condition, but the hiking trip went tragically wrong.
The walk went to Palandöken mountain in northeastern Turkey. The national team had not informed the authorities of the area about their plans, so the athletes had no information about a safe route.
– If we had known about this in advance, we could have investigated the area, and this sad accident could have been avoided, the authorities said.
A total of five people were injured in the avalanche. The four who survived are still in the hospital.
According to the rescue service, one of the male persons trapped under the avalanche had to be pulled out from a depth of two meters. A broken neck was suspected.
