Things couldn’t have gone better for Michael van Gerwen. The former darts world champion won the “Ally Pally” and is therefore one round further.

The three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen made a convincing start to the Darts World Cup in London. The 35-year-old Dutchman won his opening game at Alexandra Palace 3-0 against Englishman James Hurrell. This means van Gerwen is confidently in the third round of the tournament.

He wrote on Instagram: “Nice to be back at Ally Pally. I’m happy to start the World Championships with a win. Thanks for the support – see you after Christmas.”

A much more demanding opponent could be waiting for him there in Northern Irishman Brendan Dolan, a quarter-finalist from last year. However, Dolan will first face Lok Yin Lee from Hong Kong in the second round. Van Gerwen, in third place on the seeding list, will follow the game of his possible opponents with interest.

The Dutchman has already won the World Cup three times: in 2014 as the youngest player to date, as well as in 2017 and 2019. He reached his last final two years ago, while he failed in the quarter-finals last year.
