As a general practitioner, I make biweekly visits to a 93-year-old patient. She is lying in bed with the flu, the newspaper on her lap. Every visit I get the same questions: “How is your working week?” “Quite busy, but we do our best.”

“Who helps you with the children at home?” “My dear parents-in-law who babysit.”

And then: “Also a man, doctor?” “Yes, a very handsome one,” I say jokingly. “It’s a blessing that he puts up with me!”

“That’s not that difficult, doctor.” I look up, flattered. “You’re never home!”
