Jefferies: This is the biggest AI profiteer – NVIDIA shares are only number two and at October lows

The chip designer NVIDIA is benefiting enormously from the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. But there is a little-known AI company that has performed even better over the past two years.

• Jefferies creates list of biggest AI winners
• NVIDIA surprisingly only in second position
• Vertiv performed better than NVIDIA

Since the launch of the chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022, a real AI euphoria has broken out. As a result, the need for specialized technology in data centers is increasing, from which the NVIDIA Group in particular benefits, as its technologies originally developed for graphics cards are also particularly useful for AI applications. Thanks to its technological lead, NVIDIA has become the market leader and now controls around 80 percent of the global market for high-performance AI processors.

The fact that NVIDIA became virtually synonymous with the AI boom is also due to the fact that the US company was already quite well known and was therefore able to attract the public’s attention. NVIDIA was already the 13th largest US company by market capitalization when the AI enthusiasm began. The US company Vertiv Holdings, on the other hand, is relatively unknown, although the cooling technology manufacturer based in Ohio has even developed better than NVIDIA in the last two years, as “CNBC” reported around two years after the debut of ChatGPT, citing the analyst firm Jefferies reported.

Vertiv share price explosion

Jefferies identified Vertiv, a digital infrastructure provider whose offerings include AC and DC power management products, switchgear and busbars, thermal management products, integrated rack systems, modular solutions and management systems for monitoring and controlling digital infrastructure, as the top AI winner . Vertiv is important for the AI hype because the company also produces cooling equipment and infrastructure for energy-intensive data centers. In the two years after the ChatGPT launch, the Vertiv share price climbed by 761 percent. Since the beginning of 2024, the increase has been 162 percent (as of December 16, 2024).

In an interview with CNBC’s “The Exchange” in October, Vertiv CEO Giordano Albertazzi was very optimistic about the future. “We believe we are in a very strong position to really capitalize on the benefits – from the acceleration of demand that AI brings to the entire data center industry, and we are a leading provider of data center infrastructure,” said Albertazzi.

NVIDIA stock only number two

NVIDIA ends up in second place in this performance ranking: the chip designer’s share price climbed a strong 722 percent in the two years after the launch of ChatGPT. Modine Manufacturing follows a little behind in third place. The little-known air cooling stock jumped 549 percent in the same two-year period. Only behind them are the industry giants Super Micro Computer (+384 percent in two years / 4th place), Broadcom (+208 percent / 5th place) and Advanced Micro Devices (+90 percent / 6th place).

NVIDIA shares hit lows since October on Tuesday

Meanwhile, NVIDIA shares fell by 1.27 percent to $130.33 on the NASDAQ on Tuesday, reaching another low since October. Previously the most valuable stock exchange company in the world, the graphics processor developer has now been replaced by the iPhone manufacturer Apple.
