Since taking office at FC Bayern, Max Eberl has discovered the attack department. The sports director also wants to emulate his predecessor Uli Hoeneß in other ways.
“Uli Hoeneß is a role model for me – as a manager, but above all as a person. The way he treated the players and there were world stars there: That has to do with his humanity and his authenticity. I live that too,” he said 51-year-old made the comparison with the honorary president in “Blickpunkt Sport” on “BR” on Sunday.
For years, Hoeneß had shaped an era in Munich that is rarely seen in world football. Whenever the club was criticized, the manager launched an even greater counter-offensive. Eberl has been similarly contentious for a few months now.
The ex-Gladbacher assured that he wasn’t trying to imitate the long-time manager. Rather, an offensive appearance in the media is his “nature”.
“The team and the support staff are your baby. You stand in front of them and simply want to defend them because you have made decisions out of conviction,” Eberl explained his thinking.
Eberl aggressive after FC Bayern’s setbacks
He can’t always pay attention to the sensitivities of outsiders. “I don’t mean it in a bad way, I don’t want to make anyone look stupid. I’m fighting for what I’ve decided. I’m fighting for the team, the coach and the club. I want the best possible – with all the bandages,” Eberl described his way .
He wants to maintain this pattern in the future. Because honest outbursts of emotion are sometimes better than precisely tailored statements.
“Emotions are part of it. There’s the moment when you say: I’m not thinking about it now, I’m just feeling and I want to communicate it that way,” says Eberl.
Eberl has delivered memorable performances in recent months, especially after the cup defeat against Bayer Leverkusen (0:1) and the away defeat against FC Barcelona (1:4).
