The American had a serious accident in Killington. She has now caused a stir with a photo of the injury.
The painful consequences of a serious fall: Ski star Mikaela Shiffrin shared photos on Instagram of the injury she sustained in her accident at the giant slalom in Killington last weekend. The 29-year-old world champion suffered a puncture wound on her stomach and extensive hematomas in the area surrounding the injury.
Shiffrin was still in the lead after the first round on the way to her 100th World Cup victory, but slipped on the steep slope in the final, rolled over and landed in the safety fence.
“I am very grateful that the fall was not worse,” Shiffrin now wrote. “It was a damn close call that some organs would have been hit and that would have completely changed the situation for the worse.”
The cause of the injury remains unclear. “In my case, the damage was done before I got close to the net,” Shiffrin is certain. The assumption is that the injury may have been caused by her own ski pole before she even reached the safety net.
After the American woman was injured, discussions about safety arose. There was also speculation that the safety net or a nearby backpack caused the wound. How long Shiffrin will have to take a break remains unclear. She emphasized that she wanted to give her injury time to heal.
