The wave of annual reviews is gradually rolling towards us – and there is one on the short video platform TikTok. The company has now published its top lists of TikTok annual trends, including the highlights in the music category.
TikTok – The Hit Indicator
Although, according to the company, 22 million people in Germany already have an account on TikTok, there are certainly a few people to whom many of the names mentioned will mean absolutely nothing. Bodo Wartke and Mart Fischer, who went viral internationally with their tongue-twister song “Barbara Bar” on the platform, are probably the exception. But: As a music analysis from TikTok shows, one in four songs in the official German top 100 singles charts will reportedly first trend on TikTok in 2023. And not just for newcomers, but also for classics. We remember: Suddenly Kate Bush was back in the best lists last year with “Running Up That Hill” from 1985. How is it looking this year?

Yeri Mua, whose real name is Yeri Cruz Varela, took first place this year. This shows that a make-up and cosmetics influencer on TikTok can quickly become a musician. In 2023 she started her music career in the reggaeton genre with hits like “Chupón” and “Línea del perreo”, which already achieved great success last year.

Here too, the newcomers are of course in the short video community – and hope to somehow reach the masses. The Bonn singer and rapper Kauta, whose actual name is Kaouthar Boulfazat, did this particularly well. She gained greater fame with the song “Insichtbar”, followed recently by her latest song “Anders”, produced by Aside, who has already worked with Nina Chuba and Badmómzjay.

Not only were the most successful artists identified, but also the most trending songs. “Gata Only”, a reggaeton song by FloyyMenor and Cris MJ, which was released in February 2024, landed at the top internationally. The track, which is part of FloyyMenor’s debut EP EL COMIENZO, was produced by Big Cvyu and reached number one on the charts in 20 countries.

The hit also made it to number one in Germany, and the second one – the catchy tune for the spinning raccoon meme – is also identical. Tinashe’s “Nasty” took third place. The American singer rap-sings in a dead serious tone about her search for a partner who can satisfy her sexual desire and asks the provocative question: “Is somebody gonna match my freak?”
