FC Barcelona and Arsenal FC have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. With German national players Marc-André ter Stegen and İlkay Gündoğan in the starting line-up, Barça beat SSC Napoli 3-1 (2-1) in the second leg of the round of 16 on Tuesday evening. Arsenal won 4-2 on penalties against FC Porto. After regular time and extra time, the score was 1-0 (1-0, 0-0) for Kai Havertz’s Gunners.

Barcelona made it much more confident after the 1-1 draw in the first leg in Naples. Fermín López (15th), João Cancelo (17th) and Robert Lewandowski (83rd) scored the goals for the hosts. Amir Rrahmani (30th) scored the next goal for the Italians.

Barcelona were the better team for long stretches and started the game strongly against the Italians, who were struggling in the league. With a double strike within two minutes, López and ex-Munich Cancelo gave the hosts the lead. Ter Stegen in goal initially had nothing to do – until Rrahmani suddenly equalized. But even after the break, Barça remained dominant for long stretches. After a fine combination via Gündoğan and Sergi Roberto, Lewandowski finally scored the winning goal.

Penalty hero Raya: Arsenal reach Champions League quarter-finals

Things were much tighter in London. After Porto won the first leg 1-0, the visitors defended cleverly and passionately this time. Only in the first half did Arsenal find a gap after a fine pass from captain Martin Odegaard, and Leandro Trossard converted to take the lead. It stayed that way until the penalty shootout, in which Havertz also scored safely. In the Portuguese case, ex-Leverkusen player Wendell and Galeno failed because of goalkeeper David Raya, which is why Arsenal ultimately prevailed.
