1. FC Saarbrücken also throws Gladbach out

Third division team Saarbrücken remains the surprise team in the DFB Cup. After Bavaria and Frankfurt, the Saarlanders also beat Gladbach.

The cup miracle continues: 1. FC Saarbrücken has thrown out the next Bundesliga club after FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt. In the quarter-finals against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the third division team won 2-1 (1-1) thanks to a goal from Kai Brünker in the third minute of added time.

Gladbach’s Robin Hack (8th minute) and Saarbrücken’s Amine Naifi (11th) had previously scored.

“Today we set off another fireworks display with the fans,” said Saarbrücken’s Patrick Sontheimer on the Sky microphone. “It certainly wasn’t a nice game,” said the midfielder: “But you can’t imagine it being any better.” In the semi-finals, the Saarbrücken team will meet their neighbors 1. FC Kaiserslautern on April 2nd (from 8:45 p.m. in the t-online live ticker).

That’s how the game went

The home team started briskly and had their first chance of the game in the sixth minute. But after a counterattack, Robin Becker’s shot from the edge of the penalty area landed about half a meter above the goal.

Two minutes later, Gladbach’s Robin Hack did better and put the ball safely into the bottom left corner of the goal from 13 meters. But the favorite’s lead didn’t last long. Just three minutes later, FCS professional Amine Naifi made it 1-1 after a rebound from 18 meters.

For Gladbach it was more of a provocation than a shock and as a result the West Germans created three chances in quick succession. First Rocco Reitz, who was running alone towards the Saarbrücken goal, misused the ball in the penalty area (14th), then Franck Honorat failed from four meters to Lukas Boeder, who was positioned on the goal line, and then Hack missed the box again with a long-range shot.

As a result, the game petered out on a rain-soaked pitch and safety passes and technical inaccuracies dominated the proceedings. In the 60th minute something worth mentioning happened again near the goal. After a pass from Jordan to Hack, the Gladbach player lobbed the ball just over the goal from 16 meters.

However, there wasn’t much more spectacular to see in the second half – until Bjarne Tholeke got the ball in the penalty area in the first minute of added time, but his low shot from the crowd missed the goal by a good two meters.

When everything looked like extra time, Brünker ensured the surprising final score (90th +3).
