China wants to make more of its own food supply | Abroad

China cannot rely on international markets to ensure that there is always enough food available. That is why the country has to put more effort into its own food supply. Chinese President Xi Jinping said this at a political meeting, according to state media.

According to him, China should focus on its domestic food markets while ensuring that there are sufficient import opportunities. Xi also stressed the importance of protecting farmland and further technological development of the seed industry to solve food security issues.

There are several important political meetings in China this weekend and therefore more news has already come out about the economic policy for the coming period. For example, on Saturday Prime Minister Li Keqiang announced that China is giving high priority to energy security and is refusing to set a specific target for phasing out energy use. The country is therefore going to extract more oil, gas and coal and build up reserves.

The latter said the prime minister at the start of an annual session of the National People’s Congress, the Chinese parliament. Various policy makers have also pointed to the importance of food security. This theme is now even considered extra important by the Chinese government because the world market prices of, for example, grain and other crops have risen sharply due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
