Double engine with 313 HP and 494 Nm of torque, all-wheel drive and Oled circular display as infotainment system. Here’s how it performed in our test
There Countryman SE All4 – i.e. the electric Countryman – is the first Mini built in Germany, at the Leipzig plants. From this statement it is possible to imagine the close link with BMW and the related group. The two electric motors, for example, are the same ones mounted on the cars of the Elica brand, while the platform is the same as the BMW X2. Economy of scale, sharing of know-how and low costs: in 2024 it is not yet a rule, but a good suggestion to follow for stability. Looking at the car, the Countryman SE All4 has a starting cost of 46,700 euros in Essential trim; the Classic costs 48,910 euros, the Favorite 52,250 euros and the Jcw 54,090 euros.
Mini Countryman SE All4: how it is made, the design
—
The dimensions of the second generation Mini Countryman remain those of a crossovers: 444 cm long, 184 wide and 166 high, with a sloping tail and a raised trim. The break with the past – even if a first series of the electric never existed, this is the real debut of this diet – is given in particular by the cut of the front headlights, now decidedly more squared than before. But in general it is the entire front that changes into something more angular and clear-cut, as highlighted by the grille and the geometries of the bodywork. Flush handles and specific circles characterize the sides, while at the rear the light signature with a strong vertical development has been revised like the front one. Compared to the BMW more linear and homogeneous.
Mini Countryman SE All4: how it is made, the interior
—
The typically Mini interiors are embellished with physical buttons that are pleasing to the eye and easy to use such as the lever for driving modes rather than the one for starting the engine. All attention is focused on the circular central display: it is the first time that a round Oled screen has been used on a car. However, interesting entertainment functions do not correspond to fluidity of use, with the system tending to respond a little late compared to inputs. With an infotainment system so rich and concentrated in information placed in a circular dial, the head up display becomes indispensable (which is however optional). The latter allows you to barely take your eyes off the road by reading essential information such as speed and navigation directly on the asphalt, thanks to augmented reality. As for the driving position, the seat is comfortable and not too restrictive, valuable in its brick colour. The steering wheel, pleasant to hold, has a slightly too thick crown, while the dashboard is covered in polyester of recycled origin with valid color choices.
Mini Countryman SE All4: how it is made, the technique
—
Based on the same platform as its endothermic sister, as well as the BMW X2, the Mini Countryman SE All4 has two electric motors, one per axle. This results in four-wheel drive without mechanical joints. The power is 313 hp in total and 494 Nm of torque: The motors are powered by a lithium-ion battery from 64.6 kWh net. The performance is that of a fast car (5.6 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h), but like all electric cars it is electronically limited in top speed, 180 km/h. It takes 10 hours to fully charge it at 7.4 kW, while 29 minutes are enough to bring the battery from 10 to 80% in direct current with power up to 130 kW. The declared autonomy is just under 450 km. There are three driving modes that really change the character of the car: Green, Core and Go Kart Mode, the other five are only environmental themes.
Mini Countryman SE All4: how it goes
—
Behind the wheel of the Mini Countryman SE All4 you have that comfort – given by ground clearance, trim and attention to passenger seating – typical of a crossover. Tested a few hours away from its Jcw twin, the SE All4 certainly has a set-up less devoted to sportiness and more attentive to comfort for the driver. The shot is lightning fast, the car picks up speed with remarkable ease thanks to the 313 HP of power, but above all thanks to the 494 Nm of torque, far more than enough to take away a few whims at every restart. The solid technical basis given by the platform on which it rests gives the certainty of being able to travel a winding road with panache, without however replicating the dynamic performance of the endothermic sports car.
Mini Countryman SE All4: pros and cons
—
Below are the strengths and weaknesses of the Mini Countryman SE All4 tested on the roads of Portugal.
- Internal design: the seats are valuable, the circular Oled screen in the center of the dashboard has a great impact;
- Sprint: with a 0-100 in 5.6 seconds it can’t be otherwise.
- Head-up display: it is optional. Without a digital dashboard and with a lot of information contained in the circular Oled screen, having standard support for the main info on all trim levels would have been welcome.
