Marie Soldat plays Mozart, Romberg and Haydn | Advertisement
Baroque violinist Cecilia Bernardini, fortepianist Keiko Shichijo and cellist Marcus van den Munckhof together form the trio Marie Soldat. On Sunday they will present a program with piano trios by Mozart, Romberg and Haydn in the Lutheran Church in Groningen. Fortepianist Keiko Shichijo provides a special sound, in both classical and new music. Together with baroque violinist Cecilia Bernardini she was regularly heard at Musica Antiqua Nova.
For Keiko Shichijo, Cecile Bernardini and Marcus van den Munckhof, the 19th century violinist Marie Soldat was the icon to name their trio after. Marie Soldat was discovered by Brahms as a 15-year-old top talent and trained by Joseph Joachim as a student. In the 19th century, she was the only woman to perform Brahms’ violin sonatas in the Viennese Salons and on European stages for many years. And she also founded an all-female string quartet. St. Matthew by Luthers Bach Ensemble | Advertisement
Until March 10, the Luthers Bach Ensemble will once again present seven performances of her semi-scenic St. Matthew Passion, unique to the Netherlands. The soloists and choir wear everyday clothes and sing everything by heart. It increases the interaction between the singers and with the audience. Gestures and movements underline the drama of passion.
The Luthers Bach Ensemble is the only music company in the Netherlands that performs St. Matthew in this way. As before, the direction of this production is in the hands of Marc Pantus, the whole thing is under the direction of Tymen Jan Bronda. The performance can still be seen in the north March 7 in the Nicolaïkerk in Appingedam and on March 9 in the Martini Church in Groningen. On luthersbachensemble.nl more information can be found.

The riddle of the Hondsrug
The mystery of the seventy kilometer long Hondsrug and the geological history of the Hondsrug area are discussed in a lecture by Enno Bregman. The central question is how such a specific geological phenomenon arises and why exactly here. The UNESCO Geopark status that the area carries is also explained in the lecture. Specific attention is paid to the formation of the Hondsrug, a process that is very impressive. Bregman delves deeper into the impact of the ice ages that influenced Northwestern Europe. The relationship between land ice and the deeper subsurface receives special attention, including in relation to the origin of the Voorste Diep. This explanation serves as preparation on a cycling excursion that takes place on March 9. The Voorste Diep, a noteworthy aspect of the lecture, will also be visited. Anyone who has ever wanted to discover the secrets of the Hondsrug and its surroundings has come to the right place at Bregman.
At the same time, visitors’ knowledge of geological history is further deepened. The lecture is free for holders of the Museum Annual Card and volunteers from the Geopark, Hunebed Center and Het Drentse Landschap. You can register for both the lecture and the excursion, which are offered separately but can also be taken together dehondsrug.nl/hondsrug-academie.
