Three more candidates are in the race for the DHV Prize, the annual prize of the Drenthe Historical Society. The nominees are a book, a virtual film and a collection of cultural historical events.
The prize goes to a project that has made a contribution to Drenthe’s history in 2023. A five-member jury, with Jetta Klijnsma as chairman, selected the nominees. They chose the three contenders (On Dalerveen, Opdegribbelgrab and The great village fire of 1923) from a total of 24 entries.
What is special about this publication is the variety of entries that the jury saw. “Not just books, which is also wonderful,” says Klijnsma. “This time there were also walks, a museum and a film. Even a partnership in which young people and older people talk about history. Very nice that it is so different.”
Back to the three candidates, which Klijnsma further highlights in random order. The first nominee: On Dalerveen. A book, based on conversations with (former) residents and other stakeholders, in which the reader takes a historical journey through the village. “Written by Dalerveners themselves,” says Klijnsma. “A beautiful book, really something to write home about, with beautiful photos.”
Opdegribbelgrab is a colorful collection of cultural-historical events in and around Borger. “That could be a walk, sketches or something with poetry. And everything is spoken in Drenthe,” says Klijnsma.
The virtual movie The great village fire of 1923 reconstructs a black page in Dwingelder history. On August 13, the Nicholas Church, a synagogue and a number of farms went up in flames. Klijnsma: “You see what Dwingeloo looked like at the time, how the fire started and how the sea of flames changed things considerably.”
