Ariel Goldvarg: Conscious public speaking, the challenge of communicating and achieving impact

How many times do we have very clear what we want to say, but when we do it, we get distracted by details and lose focus? Or maybe we are sure of what we know, but we are intimidated by the space or the people who will listen to us; Then we get nervous and our communication ends up being harsh, diluted and lifeless.

This and so many other topics are the most recurring in my work for more than twenty years training leaders, entrepreneurs and figures from different fields, assisting them to carry out natural and fluid communication in their activities.

The key when expressing ourselves is being able to maintain our personal style. This is very obvious and yet it escapes our scheme, and we often end up providing wooden messages, speaking in a difficult way or worrying more about looking good than communicating something of value.

From there arises the need to develop Conscious Oratory, which is the methodology that seeks to create experiences that achieve an authentic, genuine and natural connection with the audience. This applies to both large stages and small meetings, in-person, virtual, live or recorded formats; even our WhatsApp audios.

To develop it, we can organize our message around four main areas. While each is independent, they all complement and impact each other. That is why it is so important to identify them, know them and learn to handle them fluently.

The first focuses on the content. It is the conceptual, objective part. The data we want to communicate. Training in this area consists of identifying the ideas we want to express and the information that supports our messages.

The second has to do with the shape. They are the resources we use to communicate those ideas: stories, examples and anecdotes, as well as the inflections of the voice, body and gestures.

The third explores the context. That is, the audience and its characteristics, but also the area where we are going to exhibit. Training in this area implies knowing how to “read” the public and also handle the codes of each format. A live conference, as well as one that will be recorded or virtual, will require different aspects than a presentation to a client, a class, or a presentation on a media or social network.

The fourth and most important is the I. The identity. Our unique seal when transmitting an idea. This involves working with ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve messages that have our imprint. It is the most interesting and complex area at the same time.

There are many ways to develop conscious public speaking. An exercise that I usually do with my clients is to suggest they improvise on unusual topics (to stimulate their creativity) or take any text and explore different ways of interpreting it. Then I work with their personal ways to communicate, share their ideas, and thus create more authentic and personal contexts.

Training provides the flexibility to articulate ideas that generate influence. For each person, perhaps the need for work will be different, but without a doubt any message that contains these four aspects in balance will achieve an impact that will inspire, surprise and communicate, providing value to others.
