A 43-year-old man from Oss caused chaos in the center of Nijmegen last November with a stolen car and under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He should be severely punished for this. But, the court in Arnhem has ruled, the man is so addicted and has so many problems that it is more important to get him treated.
For this reason, the man from Oss got away with a prison sentence of 75 days and a driving ban of six months.
If he makes the mistake again, he will face another 150 days in prison and will lose his driver’s license for an additional six months. During the probationary period he must undergo treatment. He has also been ordered to pay a fine of 400 euros.
Off at full speed
The man stole a car in the center of Nijmegen on November 4, 2023. He started driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs and without a valid driver’s license. After the police gave chase, he took off at full speed. He drove much faster than permitted and did not keep enough to the right, which caused several accidents.
The car eventually came to a stop against the fence of a company. The man then ran away, after which he was arrested.
Tin damage
According to the court, it is only due to the attentiveness of other road users and chance that only visual damage occurred in the collisions. The court also blamed the man for having previously been convicted of driving under the influence and car theft. Nevertheless, the man escaped a longer prison sentence because the judge believes he should be treated.
