Artur Jorge, former Portuguese coach who managed Porto, Benfica and PSG, as well as Portugal, Switzerland and Cameroon, has died at the age of 78.
“FC Porto mourns the loss of one of the greatest figures in its history”, this is how the club reacted on the official website, having also won three league titles with Jorge as coach, in addition to the 87 European Cup with the 2-2 victory 1 in the final against Bayern in Vienna. Jorge won a total of seven Portuguese championships, four as a player with Benfica and three as manager of Porto, before leading PSG to their second triumph in the French top flight in 1994. “It is with profound sadness that the family of Artur Jorge Braga de Melo Teixeira announces his death this morning in Lisbon following a long illness,” his family said in a statement reported by Portuguese media.

Raised through Porto’s youth system, Jorge played only a few games for the senior team and became the club’s head coach in 1984. He left after the European Cup triumph, but returned for a second spell in 1989, winning the third championship at the helm of the team. “His death leaves Porto FC without a legend,” the club said in a statement. Jorge coached the Portuguese national team for two periods, the first from 1990 to 1991 when he was also coach of Porto, and the second from 1996 to 1997. He was the coach of Switzerland at the 1996 European Championship and also coached the national team of Cameroon, failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

Jorge will also be remembered fondly in Paris, where he led PSG to the championship and French Cup after spending two years at Racing Paris. “Artur Jorge is the greatest coach I have ever known,” said former PSG president Michel Denisot. “Educated, cultured, passionate, strategic, uncompromising… with him PSG grew very quickly.”
