Birgitta, mother of three children, married a German prince in 1961, Johann Georg Carl Leopold Eitel-Friedrich Meinrad Maria Hubertus Michaelin with and converted to Catholicism. At the same time, Birgitta lost her right to inherit the crown.

The couple lived apart since 1990, but they never officially divorced. Johann Georg av Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen died in March 2016.
