OM: community service and driving suspension for accident by former Emmenaar

A 23-year-old former Emmenaar, who caused an accident on the Winschoterweg near Waterhuizen in Groningen on August 13, 2019, must carry out a community service order of 60 hours as far as the Public Prosecution Service is concerned.

The public prosecutor also demanded a three-month conditional driving ban for him.

honking

The man, who now lives in Groningen, ended up on the left side of the road near Waterhuizen around half past six in the evening. He ran into an oncoming truck. The truck, loaded with manure, ended up on its side in the verge after the collision. Shortly before the collision, the driver had already warned the young driver by honking his horn.

The driver of the truck suffered injuries from the collision, including facial fractures, a fractured collarbone and a broken leg. After the accident, he was unable to perform his work for five weeks.

Too fast

The former Emmen said at the hearing that he had not seen the truck. He wanted to pick up a bottle of water in the car and hadn’t been paying attention for a while, he said. Further investigation revealed that the suspect had also been speeding. He drove on that road 86 kilometers per hour, where 60 kilometers is allowed.

“It may not have been the speed that caused the accident, but it was the oversight,” the officer said. She states that the man may have been ‘not on the lesson’ while driving.

With her sentence, she took into account the antiquity of the case and the suspect’s clean criminal record. He suffered a knee injury as a result of the accident. The truck driver did not file a claim for damages. Judgment is in two weeks.
