The carnival association De Deurdarsers from Opmeer and Spanbroek proves that the carnival does not just consist of hustling and partying. They made 18 home visits to people who could use some support.
No fewer than 18 home visits are scheduled on the eve of carnival, neatly distributed by, among others, the board members and the Council of 11 of De Deurdarsers. It has been a tradition for years. “We visit people who do not have the opportunity to come to us. These may be people who are ill, too old, or lonely. In the past, it was also called visiting the sick and only the sick were visited, but nowadays it has expanded so that these people can also participate in carnival,” says board member Ilse Bijl.
Previously, the carnival association received a note from the GP, but now people can be registered for a home visit. For example, Prince Boni-M – Marius Boon – goes with the Princess and the Adjutant to visit his uncle and aunt: Ans and Flip Mes. “They are my Peter and Godmother and are close to me. Now that I am Prince for once, I like to go there.”
Broader than just a party
The visit is appreciated by Flip Mes. “I think it is a very nice idea. It is important that attention is paid to the elderly.” Boon also fully supports the idea. “Carnival is mainly about parties, fun and a bit of craziness, but there is also depth to it. We go to schools and visit people who deserve some extra attention. Carnival is broader than just the party.”
When the tea is finished and a present is presented, the trio gets on their way again. On to the next address.
