Sports director talks about new goals for the season and Guirassy’s comeback

VfB Stuttgart put up a courageous fight with Bayern Leverkusen in the cup quarter-finals, but lost 3-2 after a last-minute punch. The DFB Cup is no longer a goal for the season, but VfB sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth doesn’t want to come up with a new one yet.

Absolutely disappointed, but still proud. This is probably how the mood of VfB sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth can be described in the mixed zone after VfB Stuttgart’s cup thriller at Bayer Leverkusen.

The game was “highly intense” and “did not allow any rest,” so both teams were “challenged every second,” explained Wohlgemuth. “It was 90 minutes at eye level.” The fact that VfB then conceded the decisive goal in the 90th minute was “very bitter”. “We are all very disappointed,” summarized Wohlgemuth.

At the same time, he emphasized that one could be “proud” of the Bundesliga leaders’ performance. “We can build on that, it motivates us for the next games.” In fact, Stuttgart has challenged the Werkself like no other club this season, who have now been unbeaten for 30 games in a row and can continue to dream of a treble. “It’s not that easy to compete here away from home,” said Wohlgemuth.

VfB can therefore cross the potential cup coup off their list of goals. In the league, however, the club has 40 points, which means that last year’s relegation winners are guaranteed to stay in the league. However, the 44-year-old did not allow himself to be persuaded to officially postpone his season goal. “Don’t try it,” he joked in response to the reporter’s question. While the fans are already singing about Europe, the VfB manager is keeping a low profile.

“The team shows every week what ambition they have. It remains the same: we’ll look at the Mainz game first, then at Darmstadt.”

But surely you want to stay in the current region (third place) in the table? “We want to be successful this season,” he said and smiled.

Guirassy will probably be there again against Mainz

He then became clearer on the question of Serhou Guirassy.

He believes it is realistic for the top striker, who was missing against Leverkusen, to play in the next Bundesliga game against Mainz.

On Monday, after the attacker’s return, they met with the medical department. Since Guirassy was still suffering from “aftermaths” from his trip to the Africa Cup with the Guinea national team and had a thigh strain, “risk management” was carried out with a view to the next 14 Bundesliga games,” said Wohlgemuth. In the direction of Mainz -Game – “rested and well prepared, it is “probable” that Guirassy will be there again.
