Since Monday (February 5th), video content from Amazon Prime Video has been shown with advertising. In doing so, the streaming provider is reacting to similar options from competitors, who offer subscription models with commercials for a lower amount.
At Amazon, however, the model differs from that of Disney+ and Netflix, some of which offer their programs without advertising at higher prices than a few years ago, although the range and technical usage options have remained the same.
For a surcharge of 2.99 euros per month you can get Amazon Prime Video content without advertising, as before. This is an additional booking that is collected separately on a monthly basis. Termination is possible at any time. The company explained before the change, which is also being made in other countries, that the spots displayed were significantly shorter than on other streaming portals.
Streaming without advertising becomes significantly more expensive
It is still unclear what all of this means for Amazon’s free streamer Freevee, which received (albeit quite penetrating) advertising. The argument that is always given in favor of restructuring is that this is the only way to continue investing in quality.
However, the growth rates of almost all streaming providers have been stagnating for several years, which certainly has to do with a larger competitive environment. Industry observers believe that Amazon and Co. are opening up new revenue opportunities for advertising.
Consumer protection center wants to sue Amazon
Consumer advocates, however, consider Amazon’s actions to be legally problematic. According to the VZBV, this is a “significant contractual change” for which Amazon would have to obtain the consent of its customers. The company should not simply present its customers with a fait accompli. It is a “hidden price increase” for which a simple announcement is not enough. The consumer advice center announced that it would take legal action against it.
