The relegation-threatened third division soccer team Waldhof Mannheim has fired coach Rüdiger Rehm and hired Marco Antwerp as a replacement. The club announced this on Wednesday evening.
“We have come to the conclusion that a new impulse and the associated change in the coaching position are necessary in order to achieve our goal of staying in the league,” said Christian Beetz, chairman of the Mannheimer supervisory board.
Antwerp has “always shown in his past positions that he can have a big influence on a team in a short space of time.” The 52-year-old was head coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern until May 2022. Overall, Antwerp has experience from 132 games in the 3rd division.
Rehm only took office in June, and after 23 points from 23 games, the supervisory board has now pulled the ripcord. Antwerp takes over the Electoral Palatinate in 17th place in the table, i.e. a direct relegation place.
