A visit to the theater with an entire family quickly becomes expensive. But during the National Theater Weekend you could go to Theater De Tamboer, the Atlas Theater and De Nieuwe Kolk for a small price. By offering the performances for 10 euros, they hope to attract people who would not normally come.
“A very good idea,” says a grandmother in a green floral dress who is with her granddaughter. “Not necessary for us because we come to the theater anyway, but for a lot of people it is.” They go to the performance together The red sneakers in De Tamboer in Hoogeveen. That is a fairy tale on stage with songs by Merel van Eldik.
“It is easier for one family to pay than for another family,” says a mother who is traveling with her son and daughter. “If you compare it to the playground, it is expensive.”
By removing the financial barrier, the theater hopes to introduce more visitors to the performing arts. And that is catching on. Many performances are sold out this weekend. In addition, all kinds of things are organized, such as guided tours, music and activities for children.
“It’s a party. That’s the idea,” says Conny Aalbers, youth programmer at De Tamboer. “We organize everything to let people experience the magic of the theater.”
