Last minute decision: Bayer women give up the game in Bremen

As of: January 26, 2024 8:26 p.m

Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost on matchday 11 of the women’s Bundesliga despite being ahead at Werder Bremen. Bremen’s winning goal only came in stoppage time.

In the end, Werder deservedly won 2:1 (1:0). Nikola Karczewska gave the Bayer women the lead after 21 minutes on Friday evening in the first game after the winter break. However, Skinnes Hansen scored into his own goal after 76 minutes. In the second minute of injury time, Jasmin Sehan scored to give Bremen victory. Bayer 04 have missed out on moving closer to the top of the table and are now in the middle of the table with 16 points after eleven games. Bremen now has 17 points and has overtaken Leverkusen in the table.

Karczewska shifts fastest

At the beginning the game only took place between the penalty areas. Werder had more of the game, but made too many mistakes in the final third. The Bayer women only came in front of the opposing goal for the first time in the 21st minute – and were immediately successful. Werder goalkeeper Livia Peng could only fend off a shot from Verena Wieder. Karczewska was first to the ball and pushed the ball over the line from a few meters.

Leverkusen got into the game better with the lead behind them – but there were no more chances to score on either side until the half-time whistle.

Danger only from set pieces – Hansen into his own goal

The second half started like the first – with dominant but inefficient Bremen. And Bayer 04 almost scored again thanks to Karczewska. However, the striker was offside in the 58th minute. Otherwise, little else happened in front of the goal. When things got dangerous, they did so according to standards. Leverkusen’s Karolina Vilhjálmsdóttir shot a free kick from 17 meters over the goal (65th).

At Werder, too, it was ultimately a set piece that led to the equalizer. Bayer keeper Friederike Repohl could only direct a corner onto the crossbar. Several players poked at the ball just in front of the goal line, which ended up rolling off Leverkusen’s Hansen’s leg and into the goal (76′).

Now suddenly there was significantly more traction in the game. Almost three minutes after the equalizer, Werder almost took the lead. However, Leverkusen were able to fend off substitute Jasmin Sehan’s shot on the move (79′).

In the second minute of added time the ball was still in the Leverkusen goal. Sehan directed a cross from Riecke Dieckmann into the far corner – Bayer goalkeeper Friederike Repohl didn’t look good.

Leverkusen now against Wolfsburg

The Bayer women continue next Sunday (February 4, 2024, 2 p.m.) with a difficult home game against VfL Wolfsburg. Werder Bremen welcomed 1. FC Nürnberg the day before (2 p.m.).
