Due to the flu, Leeroy Echteld was only able to participate in one training session for the group at Jong AZ this week. So during the 4-1 defeat against FC Groningen it was mainly a matter of seeing what kind of talent he had as the new trainer of the Alkmaar talents. “We did everything we could to give the match some shine.”
“Today I was busy looking at what my players can do,” Echteld said after the match. “There are plenty of good people within AZ who were able to start training this week. I saw today that there is quality in the team and we can certainly continue with that.”
“We played in Argentina, so that should not be an excuse”
The 55-year-old Echteld was still trainer of second division team De Treffers last week, but did not have to think for a second when AZ asked him to coach the promising team. “Paul Brandenburg (head of youth training, ed.) had asked whether I was open to returning if something were to happen within the club. Of course I was open to that.”

Defender Finn Stam had a tough evening against the FC Groningen attackers. According to Stam, the attractive stadium played no role in this. “It just didn’t work out today. It is of course a large stadium, but we are used to even larger stadiums. Of course we played in Argentina, so that should not be an excuse,” said Stam.
Jong AZ’s next match is on Monday, February 5. Then Roda JC comes to visit Wijdewormer.
