Flemish government designates new Canal route…

Kortrijk mayor Vincent Van Quickenborne is pleased that the Flemish government has indicated a preference. “These will be the second major Leie works,” he says.

“When I returned to Kortrijk, I immediately started working on getting the file back on track because it was stuck, completely stuck. The construction of a new stretch of canal will be our second major Lys works.”

“The project gives the new economy a boost because thanks to the water we can take tens of thousands of trucks off the road, it ensures smoother and safer mobility through the completion of the R8 (left unfinished near Den Hert since 1977) and it chooses for urban renewal for the eastern part of our city.

After all, the narrow canal section in Kortrijk of 1.5 km long will be designed as a swimming and recreation zone, a water garden and a place for water sports. We are designing the quays as a green cycling and walking boulevard. Opportunities for greenery, experience and cycle paths will also arise along the newly constructed section of the canal,” says Vincent Van Quickenborne, mayor of the city of Kortrijk and federal member of parliament.
