Freund and Schmid make it into the top 20
The competition experienced its first surprise quite early on. Qualification winner Johann Andre Forfang not only lost his lead in the raw air rating with a weak jump, but also did not even make it into the second round with only 116.5 meters in 43rd place.
Things went much better for most of the German jumpers. Severin Freund on his first jump like Constantin Schmid at 128.5 meters. With 136 meters Freund was able to improve significantly, but landed unsteadily, which only earned him marks of 17.0 and 17.5. In the end he was 18th. Schmid jumped half a meter more in the second attempt and finished twelfth.
Leyhe is allowed to jump twice, Wellinger is not
Stephan Leyhe first jumped 122 meters and saved himself as 30th in the second round, where he made a better attempt with 131 meters. This improved him to 26th place.
On the other hand, the competition was disappointing for Andreas Wellinger. He was called up to replace Pius Paschke, who had recently been weak, but was eliminated in the first round like his predecessor in Lahti. Wellinger finished 41st with 118.5 meters.
