The actor is directing for the first time since The Brave (1997).
Johnny Depp presents the first images from his latest directorial project “Modi”. This marks his return to the director’s chair. The last time the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star took a seat on “The Brave” was in 1997. The film, a biopic about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, is produced by Al Pacino.
The first images show the 60-year-old directing, with Pacino taking on the role of the real French art collector Maurice Gangnat. This is the first time the two filmmakers have worked on a joint project since “Donnie Brasco”. In a statement, Depp emphasized that it was Pacino who encouraged him to get involved in the work.
“Modi is a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking, and I look forward to bringing this unique and compelling story to the world,” were Johnny Depp’s words about “Modi,” according to the description on Instagram.

That’s what “Modes” are all about
The screenplay of the film drama is based on the play “Modigliani” by Dennis McIntyre. The action takes place in Paris in 1916 and describes the escape of the artist Modi, also known as Amedeo Modigliani, from the police. In a period of 48 hours, the life of the previously unsuccessful painter changes.
Filming on “Modi” began in Budapest in September. However, there is no date for the theatrical release yet.

The film also marks Depp’s return to the mainstream after working largely away from Hollywood. Especially after his high-profile character assassination trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp directed the film for the last time in 1997. In “The Brave” he played a Native American, but the film was torn apart by critics even before it was officially released. Ultimately, The Brave was never seen on the big screen.
