Iran says it has carried out missile and drone attacks on targets in neighboring Pakistan. The attack targeted the jihadist group Jaish al-Adl, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported. Two key extremist bases have been destroyed. The Sunni rebel group previously claimed several attacks in southeastern Iran. Pakistani authorities report the death of “two innocent children”.
Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice” in Arabic) says it is fighting for independence in the Iranian province of Sistan and Balochistan, one of the poorest regions in Iran where many members of the Baloch ethnic minority who follow Sunni Islam live. Mostly Shia Muslims live in Iran.
The US and Iran have classified Jaish al-Adl as a terrorist organization.
Last night, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired ballistic missiles at “terrorist” targets in Syria and Iraq. It was said to be retaliation for the killing of a high-ranking Revolutionary Guard officer in December and for the double bombing in Kerman on January 3, when the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was commemorated. 91 people were killed in that double attack. The government in Baghdad condemned the attack by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
