No more government pay for priests with a criminal record

The bill stipulates that operators will no longer receive a salary from the FPS Justice if they cannot provide a blank extract of their criminal record. An exception can be requested, for example for someone who has been convicted for excessive speed in traffic, which is then investigated by the FPS. The text also stipulates that a criminal record extract must be checked every five years.

The draft now moves to the Council of State for advice, after which it must pass back to the government table and then receive the green light in parliament. Until that legal regulation is in place, the government has received a commitment from the Catholic Church that clergy who have been guilty of sexual abuse will be removed from the payroll. In the meantime, according to the minister, four people have already been removed and the procedure is ongoing for four others.
