How good is Julian Nagelsmann as a national coach? After his first games as DFB coach, opinions differ. A BVB legend has a clear opinion.
How well Julian Nagelsmann has mastered his job as national coach can only be finally said after the European Championships in Germany this year. However, the first appearances of the DFB team under his leadership have already raised some doubters. Among them is the former BVB and Schalke star Andreas Möller.
Möller, world champion in 1990 and European champion in 1996, is convinced that Nagelsmann has deficits that cannot be concealed in such a short time.
“I think the job comes far too soon for him”
“He would have to be the one who creates hierarchy and distribution of tasks. He also has to try to get the players to go through fire for him. But to do that in such a short time is very difficult. Especially since he is still very young – keyword authority – and everyone knows that he is only a temporary coach until the European Championships,” said Möller in an “Bild” interview.
The ex-national player then spoke plainly and said: “I’ll say it quite openly: I think the job comes far too early for him. But it is also proof that German football is not a bed of roses when it comes to coaches is.” In other words: Möller would have liked a different national coach. But who?
BVB legend would have liked Magath on the DFB bench
“Honestly? Felix Magath! In the past, the national coach was someone who had great merit and a lot of experience. And that is currently Magath,” the now 56-year-old said in support of the former champion coach of Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg.
With a view to the European Championships, Möller gave Nagelsmann what he considered to be important advice: “Above all, he has to be clear: This is not about making an excessive formation and tactics where everyone clicks their tongues . The most important thing is: keep it simple, stop complicating everything.”
