It is the first of a long series of unexpected events. They accept the help of a man who offers them to cross the desert of the empty quarter, or the Rub’ al-Khali, the largest sand desert in the world.
Fogg (David Tennant) agrees to leave and takes Passepartout (Ibrahim Loma) with him, although he is sceptical. Furthermore, the guide warns that it is nicknamed the empty quarter because everyone who crosses it dies. AND they decide to leave Fix (Leonie Benesch) in Al Hudayah without notifying her.
Fix is a tenacious young woman, determined to tell their journey. And when she discovers that the two have left without notifying her, she goes into a rage. She goes looking for guidance, but to no avail. So asks for help from Jane Digby (Lindsay Duncan), an English noblewoman married to Sheikh Medjuel el Mezrab (Faical Elkihel).
However, there is bad blood between Fix and Jane. Abigail, in fact, defines her as “the most immoral woman in the world”, guilty of having abandoned her children to pursue various loves around the world. After her initial refusal, however, Jane agrees to help her thanks to her husband’s intercession.
Fix saves Fogg and Passepartout
In the desert things get bad. The guide who accompanies them turns out to be a thief. Robbed of everything, they find themselves alone in the middle of endless expanses of sand. And they both miss Fix. To add pathos to the adventure, a sandstorm. They are exhausted, but fortunately shortly after they are saved by Fix, Jane and Medjuel.
They find refreshment in an oasis, where Jane makes shocking revelations about her father to Abigail. For Fix it is a hard blow to take. He has always considered his father, Bernard Fortescue (Jason Watkins), an example. He wants to make her proud and it is for him that she has undertaken this journey. Disappointed, she decides that once she arrives in Aden she will return to England.
At night, however, as they cross the desert, they are attacked by a group of criminals. One of these tries to kidnap Abigail. Passepartout fires a shot and kills him. Immediately afterwards, Phileas Fogg has an intuition that saves everyone.
So Abigail decides to stay and apologizes to Jane Digby. Passepartout is still shaken and is approached by a man who asks him to delay the trip to India and make Fogg miss the ship for Hong Kong. The aim is not to have him return to London by Christmas. The man is a messenger of Nyle Bellamy (Peter Sullivan), the member of the club with whom Fogg made the bet. In fact, everything revolves around a challenge: to go around the world in 80 days. There is £20,000 up for grabs.

In the fourth episode the trio arrives in India, in the village of Narupani. They go looking for a guide, but no one is available because all the inhabitants are busy preparing for a wedding. Everything goes smoothly until the arrival of the English soldiers, who arrest the groom. Fogg knows he cannot delay his departure, but offers his help to intercede and have him freed.
Meanwhile, Passepartout is experiencing a moment of crisis. He is disappointed by Phileas’ behavior and doesn’t know whether to take revenge. Eventually he spills something in the tea and Fogg falls into a frenzy. Between these, he confuses Abigail with Estella (Dolly Wells), an old flame of his, and declares his love for her. The journalist, instead of keeping the confession to herself, writes everything in an article.
Abigail then feels lost after discovering that her father has lied to her for years. She realizes that he has lost her drive and she doesn’t know how to move forward. In the end, the day of the trial for the future groom arrives. Fogg goes further and gives a speech about love before the court-martial. His words hit the mark and he manages to drop every accusation.
