Martin Hanne is the big surprise in the German squad for the European Handball Championship in their own country. Who is the backcourt player for HBL club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf? How can he help the DHB team? sport.de introduces the debutant.

Martin Hanne learned to play handball at SG Nord Edemissen. In the B youth team he moved to TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. With the warriors, the half-left marched through to the professionals.

Hanne was able to make his debut in the handball Bundesliga in the 2018/2019 season at the tender age of 17.

At the club from the capital of Lower Saxony, several top coaches worked on the development of the now 22-year-old. In his youth he was coached by the Spanish handball legend Iker Romero, while with the professionals he learned from Antonio Carlos Ortega (now at FC Barcelona) and former national coach Christian Prokop, who has been responsible for the fortunes at TSV since 2021.

With the nomination for the European Handball Championships in Germany, Hannes’ career has reached its peak – even though the 1.93 meter man had experienced a horror year in 2022.

Due to serious back problems, Hanne had to take an eleven-month break and was only able to play 13 competitive games for Hannover-Burgdorf last season. “The feeling of not being fit was very frustrating for me,” he said, looking back on his time of suffering in an interview with “handball-world.news”.

But Hanne is a fighter and worked her way back bit by bit. “We did a lot, including injections and insoles and a dental splint. Many types of therapies are intended to ensure that the pelvis becomes straight again and thus the spinal structure improves again,” he said.

“He always offered to do little extra shifts after training,” coach Prokop reported recently. Hanne herself emphasized: “I don’t have any problems anymore, I feel in great shape.”

Handball European Championship: Hanne as fast as an arrow in the 1:1

Hanne should ensure more variability and, above all, depth in the attack for the German national handball team. The 22-year-old is not only powerful from the second row, but also very fast and agile.

“Compared to others, I’m relatively fast, but primarily I see my strength in one-on-one situations,” he said on “handball-world.news” and added: “When I’m on the field, we try to use that specifically by going into the duel isolated.”

Hanne still needs improvement in her decision-making behavior. “I still want to work on that, even though it has gotten significantly better over time,” he recently noted. Hanover coach Prokop also highlighted the development: “He has learned a little more patience, being able to read the defense correctly and knowing when to attack.”

Hanne also recently received special praise from sports director Sven-Sören Christophersen. “I rarely single out individual players, but I’m really happy for Martin right now,” said the former backcourt player after the 34:29 win against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in September.

Thanks to further strong performances in the league, Hanne became the focus of national coach Alfred Gislason. The nomination was preceded by “observations of individual form curves”. This is exactly where the newcomer was able to score points.
