The strong wind is pushing up the water considerably and this could lead to very high water levels tonight. According to the predictions of Rijkswaterstaat, the water levels in Den Helder, Den Oever and Oudeschild would move towards ‘storm surge’. That is the second highest warning, followed by ‘extreme high water’.
For the first time in years, the denomination (dijkgat, ed.) is in Den Oever closed this morning to prevent the village from flooding. Anyone who has parked their car there is advised to remove it, because the harbor is guaranteed to flood. The denomination was replaced and increased in 2018, and since then it has not had to be closed due to high water.
The municipality of Texel has issued a high water warning for the port of Oudeschild, which quickly floods but now has to deal with a lot of water. Tonight around 3 o’clock the water level is expected to be around 2.70 meters. Anyone who has a car, bicycle or other loose items there, it is recommended to remove it.
Extreme
In Den Oever (outside the denomination) the water level becomes slightly higher: 2.80 meters. At the fish auction building in Den Oever, which is located on the quay, they have already taken measures against the high water, says Bert de Groot from the fish auction. “We are used to something. Last year we had three high tides, but then there was around 30, 40 centimeters of water. Although it is now becoming extreme. I’m guessing that there is 1 or 1.5 meters of water in the exit. You will soon be able to swim in it.”
“It is special that the fish will soon wash into the harbor, then you will see them swimming in the gutter”
The fish auction is designed to withstand high water levels. But measures are also being taken. De Groot: “We moved all the electrical equipment, such as the washing machine, scales and forklift trucks, to a higher floor. But we also moved the boxes, otherwise they would wash straight into the port. We deliberately open the doors a little, because the water has so much force and pushes them out differently.”
“I think it’s special that the fish will soon be washed into the harbour, and you will see them swimming in the gutter. Tomorrow we have to do a lot of cleaning. There will be sand everywhere that has come with them.”
Den Helder will also reach a water level of about 2.60 meters tonight around the same time, possibly a little earlier – around 2 am. Due to the high water, the TESO parking lot next to the main terminal in Den Helder will be partially flooded tonight, reports the TESO. Here too, the urgent advice is to remove the car from there today.
Webcam
On the Rijkswaterstaat website you can keep track of the water levels of various coastal towns live. There is also aimed at a webcam on the harbor of Oudeschild, where you can follow how the harbor is flooding this afternoon and especially tonight.
Code yellow due to strong winds applies until 8 am tomorrow morning. According to the weather maps, the strongest gusts of wind are from Ventusky expected today at the end of the afternoon, with peaks of 110 kilometers per hour in Den Helder.
