Yann Sommer is playing an outstanding first half at Inter Milan in Serie A. The former FC Bayern keeper has conceded just seven goals in 16 games in Serie A and has kept a zero record in an incredible eleven matches! At the end of the year, the veteran looks back on his interlude at FC Bayern.
Sommer only stayed with the German record champions for six months. For the second half of the 2022/2023 season, Sommer was signed as a replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer and then played a total of 25 competitive games for the Munich team.
Although he ran away again after half a season and left FC Bayern for Milan, he does not regret the move to the German industry leader in January of this year, as Sommer emphasized to “Sport Bild”.
“For me it was a good six months – with the championship at the end. Yes, we had a challenging time. Yes, there were some changes within the club. And yes, there was criticism of the team and also of me. But it was a positive time in which I learned a lot and which I wouldn’t want to miss,” said Sommer, summing up his Bayern intermezzo in a thoroughly positive manner, which also included the bitter defeats in the DFB Cup against SC Freiburg (1:2) and in the Champions League against Manchester City (0:3).
Sommer emphasizes good relationship with Manuel Neuer
The 35-year-old nevertheless made it clear that he still sees his sensational move from Borussia Mönchengladbach to FC Bayern as the right decision: “One hundred percent! I would make any move exactly the same again,” said Sommer tough.
The Swiss national goalkeeper has signed a contract with Inter Milan until the summer of 2026. Until then, the goalkeeper definitely wants to stay at his top level: “Cristiano Ronaldo has often said: ‘Age is just a number.’ “I see it the same way. It’s important how you treat your body and how you feel. And as a goalkeeper you can usually play longer than a field player,” said Sommer.
Looking back on his months at Bayern, the veteran goalkeeper emphasized once again that there were no problems in his relationship with FCB captain Manuel Neuer: “I always had a very good relationship with him. Despite his injury, we saw each other almost every day , had a good exchange. I’m very happy for him that he’s now returned like this.”
