“To date, 12 people are dead,” the Guanajuato State Attorney’s Office said on X. Authorities also reported that more than 10 injured people had been taken to hospitals.
According to the Tierra Negra foundation, which organizes social projects for the local community, the victims are young people who took part in an Advent celebration in a hacienda that is often rented out for parties.
Guanajuato is the Mexican state with the highest number of murders this year. The counter stands at more than 3,000. The region is the backdrop to a fierce battle between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación drug cartels.
Mexico has been plagued by violence for years. Last year there were almost 32,000 murders in the country of 126 million inhabitants. Numerous cartels and other criminal gangs are fighting for control of areas and drug trafficking routes.
