Mathieu van der Poel loves winning, but not necessarily award ceremonies. At the NOC*NSF Sports Gala next Wednesday, he will be one of the major contenders for the election of Sportsman of the Year. Van der Poel does not yet know whether he will be there in Utrecht, let alone whether the Jaap Eden Award will be for him.
