North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has called on potential sponsors to support second division football club FC Schalke 04 now.
Wüst paid tribute to Schalke for terminating sponsor Gazprom as a result of the Russian war against Ukraine. “It won’t be an easy situation,” said the CDU politician after crisis talks with business and trade unions on the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for North Rhine-Westphalia.
He invites everyone who wanted to support a second division team to do so now. “It’s a good opportunity and certainly has double the promotional value if you do it in this situation.”
When asked whether the state of North Rhine-Westphalia would be willing to provide the state guarantee granted in 2020, Wüst said: “We will discuss everything that affects the state in due course.”
