RChristmas gifts in advance and pay attention to the budget, but traditions remain despite the impact of inflation on prices. According to a study conducted by PayPal, economic aspects have acquired greater importance in recent years also with regards to Christmas, so much so that 34% said they buy Christmas gifts only for some family members27% have set budget limits for gifts and 10% have decided to give up the exchange of gifts. However, this does not mean that the mood of the party is lost.
Christmas gifts and traditions, how they change with Gen Z
Generation Z, today’s twenty-somethings and young adults, plan purchases in advancewith 1 in 4 buy gifts on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, for example. The survey also revealed a strong propensity towards sustainability and ethics and, in fact, 10% will purchase gifts based on these principles. Donations and social causes also play a significant role in the choice of gift (7%).
Tree decorations and Christmas movies
As regards Christmas traditions, decorating the tree is in first place with 62%, followed by moments dedicated to decorations, 47%. It does not lose its importance time spent with family which remains of great value for 61%. The custom of seeing traditional films or Christmas shows also remains, as well as participating in “Secret Santa” gift exchanges (22%), i.e. the exchange of gifts in which the recipient does not know (and should not know) who the gift comes from his gift.
The ethical gift is growing
Regarding the new traditions emerging in the last 2-3 years, we notice a growing interest in “do it yourself” decorationsindicated by 20% of those interviewed, for both economic and ethical reasons, the latter being the reason why Gen Z has also reduced gifts.
Sustainability wins
According to PayPal Italia, despite the difficulties of recent years, both from an economic and social point of view, However, Italians’ desire to celebrate Christmas has not weakenedindeed: if anything, it has placed even more emphasis on ethical and sustainability issues, particularly among Gen Z.
