At times, third division football team Rot-Weiss Essen dominated the game against SV Sandhausen, but missed their own chances. The SVS was more ripped off.
On Saturday (December 2nd, 2023) RWE lost to the Sandhäuser 1:2 (0:1) in front of their home crowd. The Essen native Abu-Bekir El-Zein was the guests’ man of the day as a double packer (38th, 65th). Ron Berlinski’s connecting goal (73′) came too late. Essen missed a step up in the table – third place would have been possible. RWE slips to fifth place and still has 27 points.
RWE takes control of the game after a slow start
It was a lively start to the game on Hafenstrasse. The SVS initially applied more pressure and tried to gain the upper hand in the game, RWE defended in a disciplined manner, but could not suppress every danger. So first Vinko Sapina made a strong pass from Sebastian Stolze and cleared for a corner – but that also became a tricky matter. Lukas Brumme decisively disrupted David Otto (9th).
But then coach Christoph Dabrowski’s team pulled themselves together and had their first big chance. Striker Leonardo Vonic almost used a quick move via Isaiah Young and Torben Müsel to take the lead in front of SVS goalkeeper Nikolai Rehnen – but he missed the goal (15th). Shortly afterwards, Rehnen made a strong save from a Müsel header (20′).
Eat After a slow start, the game increasingly took over. And had other good opportunities. But in the middle of RWE’s pressure phase, Sandhausen scored the goal to take the lead at halftime. El-Zein, who had previously posed problems for RWE as an asset on several occasions, scored with a well-placed shot from half-distance.
Essen native El-Zein puts together a double pack
After the restart the game leveled off. The game shifted between the penalty areas. Sandhausen acted quite cleverly and managed the lead.
And then it was once again El-Zein, who was born in Essen, who scored the second Sandhausen goal practically out of nowhere. Otto had lifted the ball into the penalty area, El-Zein had been lost sight of by the Essen defense. Otto then missed the preliminary decision in front of Essen goalkeeper Jakob Golz (70th).
Berlinski gives RWE hope again
But just a few minutes later, hope flared up again on Hafenstrasse. A deflected cross from Marvin Obuz landed perfectly on the foot of striker Berlinski, who slotted in.
This gave RWE another energy boost. Essen pulled itself together for a final offensive and had a lot of possession. But the hoped-for equalizer never came.
