Davis Cup, the Azzurri’s celebration with caps and champagne

The party started at 8.25pm, under the gaze of the whole world, after De Minaur’s wide backhand which decreed Sinner’s victory and the Italian triumph in the Davis Cup. Volandri’s rush to embrace Jannik, then the invasion of the field by the other members of the expedition, the words and the awards ceremony, finally the press conference seasoned with the emotion of thoughts of Tathiana Garbin. A succession of celebrations, moving dedications and celebrations, for an undertaking that Italy has been waiting for for 47 years. Everyone moved to Fuengirola, a town outside Malaga where the teams have been staying in recent days, in the resort that hosted the Azzurri. A dinner in the room where the team always ate in the week that led to glory: a meal based on hamburgers, pizza for others, salad for some. An atmosphere of joy and laughter, good humor everywhere. The players together at the same table, on the other side the president Angelo Binaghi and Filippo Volandri, captain since January 2021 and among the protagonists of the Italian triumph.

Volandri himself, during the party in Fuengirola, received the embrace of Matteo Berrettini, the great absentee among the tennis players who can be deployed by the captain but a fundamental presence in Malaga. “Next year I want to be there too and raise the salad bowl again”, the words spoken by the Roman tennis player to Volandri. Who knows what this team would be, with Berrettini at his best… The cup arrived anyway with Musetti, Arnaldi and Sonego. Lorenzo himself sparked the post-dinner party by uncorking a magnum of champagne: toasts, laughter, fun. Now everyone will go their own way, who knows how many times they will face each other next season. But the evening of November 26th created something magical, which will never be erased.
