In Haarlem, ACV managed to win the sub-topper against Royal HFC. After halftime, coach Ruud Jalving’s team turned a 2-1 deficit into another impressive 4-2 victory. Justin Mulder was the man of the match with two goals.
Prior to the match against the Haarlem team, ACV was in a very good fourth place after thirteen games. The home team was one place below with three points less, but also played two games fewer than the Assen team. A real sub-topper. The last three league matches of the blue and black were always very exciting – they won two by one goal and also lost one with only one goal between the two teams.
In Haarlem, ACV managed to win by two goals, but to achieve this it had to perform quite a feat after tea. The Blue and Blacks were trailing 2-1 at halftime. Jalving saw his team take the lead after just over fifteen minutes of play. Nande Wielink scored from a corner from Freddy Quispel. Seven minutes before half time, HFC equalized and on the stroke of half time it became 2-1.
In the second act ACV established itself again. Quite quickly, goalkeeper Joe van der Sar, indeed Edwin’s son, fouled Arnoud Bentum inside the box. Quispel took advantage of the opportunity. Justin Mulder brought the victory to Assen. He first scored after good preparatory work (a heel ball) by Bentum. Ten minutes before the end, Mulder decided the game after a nice pass from Quispel: 2-4.
Played maturely
Jalving could therefore ultimately be satisfied. He was particularly concerned about the attitude of his men. “We played on a soft field that was difficult to play on due to the heavy rainfall. So good football was not really possible. That’s why I’m proud that the boys can mentally cope with winning these kinds of matches. We lost it fifteen minutes before half time, but otherwise we played maturely,” said the winning coach. ACV will play at home against AFC next week.
