According to ex-national player Dietmar Hamann, Robert Lewandowski alone determines the end of his successful era at Bayern and a possible departure from the German record champions.
“There’s no question Bayern want to keep him. Eventually he will make a decision. I think he decides, not the club. If he thinks he has a better chance of winning the Ballon d’Or somewhere else, then now is the last chance to do it in the summer,” said Hamann on the talk show “Sky 90”.
Hamann sees the alleged dissent between Lewandowski and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic, the statements of both about the Bundesliga game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, calmly.
“They’ve been working together for so long, they’ll talk to each other at some point. These are important weeks now and Lewandowski still has a year’s contract,” said the former Bayern Munich player.
Salihamidzic had categorically ruled out Lewandowski’s departure next summer on the “Sky” microphone.
The Polish striker was surprised that he had heard the statement in this form from the club’s side “for the first time”. He was “open to everything,” said the 33-year-old. “For me, everything about the contract is topic number two, that moves into the background.”
“Bayern must be a little more active”
Munich doubles coach Felix Magath expressed his understanding for FC Bayern’s apparently reserved approach to personnel Lewandowski.
“The player is the one who decides what happens. Not the club. So I don’t think there has been a need for FC Bayern to open this topic yet. It will come at some point, but I don’t think it will come from Bayern That may have changed as a result of the interview and FC Bayern have to be a little more active,” said the 68-year-old.
