Merel (20) walks into the Library in Hilversum at 8.55 pm in her slippers. She’s just in time. Five minutes later, polling stations across the country close. “I thought I wasn’t going to make it anymore,” she says with relief.
Merel brought her mother and aunt, who had already voted earlier in the day. “I had an internship all day today. I still wanted to vote, but I was afraid I wouldn’t make it,” says Merel. Mother Carien says that they already walked past her house and immediately took her to vote.
Because of her studies in social work, she chose a left-wing party. “I was influenced by videos on TikTok. There were views from different parties, which ultimately led me to make my choice.”
