“Give him the time he needs”
Around four months after being diagnosed with lymph node cancer, right-back Stefan Lainer returns to training at Borussia Mönchengladbach. A recent final examination revealed that the 31-year-old Austrian had been cured, the “Foals” announced on Monday. The club left it open when Lainer would be able to intervene in games again and wanted to give him time to do so, said sports director Roland Virkus.
“We are incredibly happy and relieved that Stevie Lainer has won the battle against this disease. This victory makes us very happy. We are happy for Stevie and his family,” said Virkus. “The fact that he can now be part of the team again and see the other boys regularly is an important step for the future. At the same time, we are giving him the time he needs to fully come back.”
Lainer, who has been working on his physical fitness with athletic trainers in addition to his medical therapy over the past few months, said: “I’m really happy that I can concentrate fully on football again and train with the team. The last few weeks and months have been a huge challenge. I am very grateful to have received so much support from family, friends, the club and the fans during this time. All of this gave me strength. I would especially like to thank my wife and Doctor Sellmann, who were the most important of many supports during this time.”
