The National Cultural Funds, bis institutions and museums within the Heritage Act will receive a total of 36.4 million extra for Fair Pay. To this end, the subsidy ceilings of these institutions will be increased. State Secretary Uslu (Culture and Media) bases this on a study commissioned by Kunsten ’92. The precise distribution is stated in a letter she sent to the House of Representatives. The State Secretary previously announced that extra money was available to take steps towards fair pay for people working in the cultural sector.
The minister gives the sector the confidence that they will use the money for fair pay for workers and self-employed people. The BIS institutions must commit to collective rate agreements as of January 1, 2025.
State Secretary Uslu: “People who work in the cultural and creative sector do so with passion and commitment, but their position has been under pressure for a long time. Too often, the intrinsic motivation of artists comes at the expense of asking a fair price. Fair pay is the key to improving this. Partly thanks to the report commissioned by Kunsten ’92, we can now ensure that the extra money ends up where it is needed most.”
State Secretary Uslu calls on other governments that subsidize culture to follow her example: “Some cities have already taken major steps, but there are still many places where it is too difficult for creators to earn a decent income. All governments involved should have fair pay as a starting point.”
The amount for Fair Pay was originally 34.1 million euros. This has been adjusted to 36.4 million euros due to wage and price adjustments.
