First Division 1981/82 new in the TM database

… better and better!

The match reports from the English First Division season 1981/82 are now completely available in the Transfermarkt database. In the first season after the introduction of the three-point rule, the championship title went to Liverpool FC, who fought a thrilling title fight with Ipswich Town until the last matchday. In addition to this trophy, the Reds also won the League Cup in the final against Tottenham Hotspur after extra time.

At LFC, whiz kid Ian Rush led the internal goalscoring list. The 20-year-old Welsh youngster established himself in coach Bob Paisley’s first eleven and scored 17 times. Rush subsequently developed into an absolute club legend and is by far Liverpool FC’s record goalscorer.

Bryan Robson moved from West Bromwich to Manchester United for a then record fee of 1.7 million euros. Robson directed the Red Devils’ midfield for 10 years and became the captain with the longest tenure in the club’s history.

Last year’s champions Aston Villa only ended up in eleventh place in the First Division table, but the team from Birmingham was number one in Europe. In the European Cup, Aston Villa won the final in Rotterdam against FC Bayern thanks to Peter Withe’s goal. In his last season on the big football stage, Kevin Keegan from Southampton FC led the scorers list with 26 goals. Keegan, who won the Ballon d’Or twice during his time at HSV, moved to Newcastle United in the second division at the end of the season.
